I cannot forget how brave each of you were, serving your Country in that land we called Vietnam. The Friendships that we made with each other there... some to this day we renew, and others we pay homage to, on this Memorial Day 2014, for their ultimate sacrifice to Country and Company. May God bless them and us. I was known in those days as John C. white, flew with Yellow flight, 57th AHC Dec. 70 to Dec. 71. I send peace and my prayers to all of you my dear brothers. I will never forget you...

Found you site by accident but I really like it. My father, Jim Aikman was the company commander of B/227 after the organized out of the 11th Air Assault. I have a few pics I could post if you like. please feel free to use them on your site.

Dad retired in January of 73 and move back to Arkansas. He never moved again.

He talked about the Cav for the rest of his life. It was the time of his life.

I spent my first tour with 2/2nd Infantry, 1st Inf. Div. for three months, ( assigned unit was 2/34th Armor) because we were assigned with them to guard a laterite pit for some engineers. They told us that since our tanks were dug in,with very days we would be moving, that we would help the infantry by joining them on Search&Destroy, Night Ambushes, anything they did, we would too. After that I spent the other nine months riding our dragons from bad place to bad place. Out of my first year tour we had spent, maybe 25 days out of the boonies. Never believe anyone who says tanks weren't useful there.
I came back for a six month tour with the 173rd Aviation at Lai Khe, the Robin Hoods. Found my true love, other than tanks, flying gunner and loving every minute of flying. We had showers every night, clean beds to sleep on, hot chow etc. etc. After 12 months in the boonies, it was as if I'd died and gone to Heaven. When it time to come home I had orders for Ft. Knox, but I wrote a letter, made a phone call or two and was re-assigned to Ft. Rucker, Cairns Field. I finished my enlistment still getting to fly. Think I should have been born with wings.
