I was with the 165th -125th 2nd platoon and did 3 tours in country. I was not an aviation person but had infantry M.O.S. Because my brother was also in country, I had to sign a wavier to go to Nam. I was with the 4th infantry to begin with and after a brief time was pulled out and sent to 2nd platoon . I did odd jobs driving trucks , patrolling around the hill and door gunner on flights. First aircraft was a U-6 fixed wing and later got rotary aircraft. I remember Tom Green from him coming to Coastal Center and also SFC Moore who was there for a short time. Some of the company COs were Capt. Harastic , Capt. Smith , and Major Paul Cole.

Hello,

I'm the niece of 1st Lt. Carl Thomas Cahill, AH-1G Cobra pilot. I'm told he was a Platoon Captain and his major unit was: A/2/20 ARA 1 CAV. He was killed in action on 6/1/1969 in Tay Ninh province. I and members of my family will be attending the 2014 VHPA Reunion at the KIA/MIA Gold Star Breakfast on Thursday, 7/3. If there's anyone out there that remembers my uncle Carl, we'd love to hear from you.

God Bless and thank you for your service to your country.
Therese

Served with the "first Team" in Vietnam in 1965-66. A Company 8th Engineer BN (Busy Beavers) Call sign: Beaver 33
By the way: Someone needs to correct the Wilki site about the First Team's first combat operations, as it was not the Hal Moore's outfit. I was the 1st of the 9th, after they ran off the NVA and VC who had besieged the Pli Me Special Forces Camp. I know, we were operating out of Catecca after we opened that FOB for the first time. Amoung the more interesting operations that my squad preformed was finding the AIE fighter aircraft that had been shot down, removing all of the machine guns, radios and destroying the balance of the wreck. Later we went and secured a Huey slick that had gone do to a malfunction - my squad all volunteered for this mission and was beefed up to a total of 14, including 2 radios, and extra weapons and ammo. We left from the airfield in Plekui, loaded-up in 2 slicks and went in shooting up everything, and with the help of 2 Huey gunships we eliminated several snipers. After checking for bobby traps, prepared the ship and called in the lift ship, hooked the sling to a CH-47, which brought it out of harms way. Thank God nobody was wounded on our side. Hey troopers, hope some of you are still alive! David
