Comments: Great website and a wonderful service for all of those who served in Vietnam. It was my pleasure to donate items from the very earliest days of the 11th Air Assaul Division as well as some special photos from my two tours in RVN. The best going forward.

Comments: I Arrived in Can Tho AAF in Dec. '71 (2nd tour) with orders assigning me to the 13th Combat Aviation Battalion. However, when I got there the 13th had stood down and the 164th Group was packing up and folding the colors. All of the Huey (UH-H) units in the Delta were standing down and delivering their aircraft and personnel to Can Tho for processing. Most of the troops with less than 6 months in country stayed at Can Tho and most of the rest were shipped home. To say the least, it was mass confusion – Hollywood could not have created a more chaotic scene. My job for the first weeks was to go through all the quarters of officers that were on leave, inventory and pack up their personal belongings and get them ready for shipment. I was directed to “be discrete”. You may interpret that any way you wish. After that I was assigned to inventory all the aircraft and determine their status.
Once organized (an oxymoron if there ever was one), I became the senior maintenance technician (Chief Warrant Officer) (AKA Maintenance Officer) for the UH-1s and OH-58s. I was also OIC of the Aircraft Recovery Team. We occupied the ramp and old 162nd hanger on the west side of the runway. The Hillclimbers (CH-47s) were absorbed, and all this became the 18th CAC. The Hillclimbers had their own ramp, hanger and maintenance on the east side of the runway.
One slight correction to the opening information, the 18th did not have any UH-B or D model Hueys – they were all H-models. By ’71 there were no B or D model Hueys left in country. There were lots of OH-58s but unless OH-6s were assigned after Dec. ’72, there were none in the 18th CAC. Also, the Chinooks were all either B or C models – there were no A models.

Comments: I was the Data Processing Officer (DPO) for the First Marine Aircraft Wing from December 1967 until February 1969. I was stationed at the 1stMAW Headquarters at the Danang Airfield as a Mobile unit. TET began the same time as my arrival. My unit consisted of an inflatable shelter, mobile generators with air-conditioning units, data processing equipment, M313 vans and 6X6 trucks plus one Jeep. We processed gunfire hits for area analysis, pay, casualties, supplies and other information concerning the 1stMAW operations in I-Corps areas. I also had the equipment responsibilities for data processing equipment at Chu Lai, Phu Bai, Dong Ha and Monkey Mountain Supply.
