Comments: Flew with Pipesmoke at Phuloi as a rigger/gunner the year I was there 71-72 SSG Mac NCOIC Had my share of fun being one of the cocky bunch. Time there would have really sucked if I had to be one of those poor hanger rats in the 605th or one of the other company's in the 520th.

Comments: My first tour I was in the 2/34th Armor, 1st Inf. Div. in Lai Khe. Out of those twelve months, we spent, maybe, fifteen to twenty days not in the boonies. We were one of only two tank units with the 1st Inf. we would be with one unit on their op, when they went back in another one would be coming out so we went and linked up with them to go on their op. My second tour I was a door gunner with the 173rd Assault Helicopter Co. I found I LOVED flying and wished I had done it earlier. We had a clean bed and clean clothes every night and day. Food from a mess hall and even though we were shot down once and went down once from a mechanical malfunction, I loved it!
