D Troop, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment

A brief history of D 3/4

When the unit arrived at Cu Chi in Mar 66 there was a struggle for control. Ltc Sam Kalagen (Black Sam), the DAO and 25 Avn Bn Cdr attempted to secure Operational Control, but was thwarted by the Division Staff, principally by the G-2 who was a former squadron commander. When I arrived in Feb 67, the troop was under the operational control of the 3/4 cav and remained so until well after I left in Feb 68. In Dec of '66 as troop Cdr. I planed and moved the troop across the Cu Chi airfield to an area adjacent to the squadron in part to be better integrated with the remainder of the squadron. I visited D Troop in Nov '70 and it was still an integral part of the 3/4 cav. I also kept contact with the troop through out ''71 as it moved successively from Cu Chi to Lia Ky and them to Long Bin at Camp Ferndale Jones. I lost touch with it when it was converted to "F" Troop, 4 th Cav and moved up north". Tom Fleming
