Stetson hat worn by Judd Clemens with B troop Lift Platoon "DutchMasters". Note "Beercan" unit badge on side. - " At the onset of my second trip to Nam I was assigned as the XO and Ops officer in the GS Platoon, 229th AHB. Our mission was flying battalion commanders (et al) to units in the field. Not very glamourous work. A friend of mine (we had beeen OCS Tac Officers together and had gone through SF and Flight school at the same time) flew in to Bien Hoa to see me. He was wearing his Cav hat and told me to get my a-- to the Delta. He said they never bored there! At the time units to the north of use were standing down and we were getting their new guys. We had TWELVE captains in the GS platoon so I "worked a deal", got transferred from the 1st Cav Div to the 1st Avn Bde and wound up with my buddy at Vinh Long. It took months to get a Cav hat from the states so there had to be an easier way. I had an SKS rifle that I had acquired so I gave that, and 30.00, to a 1st LT for his Cav hat. I already had an SKS at home that I got during the Tet Offensive in '68 when I was with the SF, and I didn't need two. End of story."

This Plaque is one of my favorites because it looks good and it's not an"off the shelf" item. It was carved by an old guy who was born in Hanoi in 1923 and made his way to the south and wound up in Vinh Long, IV Corp, where the 7/1st was stationed.

"Off the Shelf" Dutchmaster Lift plaque. The caption say "Super Grunt" because I was the only former "ground" officer there.
