Delta 1-9 scout pocket patch - "All I know about the patch is that it was given to me by a long timer in that unit named John at Phuc Vihn, can't remember the last name. I just remember his words, "if you get killed or captured it will give the gooks a suveneer". A Troop 3/17 was not at our base in Phuc Vihn. We worked with A Troop 1/9, which was an areo scout unit that I volunteered to go with in March of 71'. D Troop 1/9 was a rifle platton of only approximately 25 men with gun jeeps. We had a Cambodian Scout named Tuc Noon that went with us into the bush. We escorted convoys, 10 man ambuse teams, secured our perimeter by reconing in the jeeps, evaluate our artillery fire by driving out to the impact area after a motar or rocket attack, get dropped off in the bush to evaluate enemy concentration or access damage done by A Troop 1/9, operate check points, search villages, rescue and support missions at night when our comrades were ambushed.
